In addition to the refinery fire department, there are several employees who are trained to respond to large-scale incidents, which might occur in the refinery, in coordination with the fire department staff. These individuals come from all divisions of the refinery, and not only understand the processes of their respective work areas but how to respond to emergencies.

The El Segundo Refinery maintains a Refinery Alarm System throughout the facility that is capable of providing audible notifications to our employees of a possible emergency that may require their attention. Each plant within the refinery has its own alarm that can be activated independently. The alarm system is centrally controlled and activated by the refinery dispatcher at the direction of the Chevron Fire Department’s on-shift battalion chief.

Although the alarms are meant to notify refinery employees inside our fenceline, the alarms can occasionally be heard in the community. As a facility we work closely with local emergency response agencies. In the event of an emergency that warranted notification to the surrounding community, we engage these agencies to contact residents and businesses using their respective city’s notification system.

Residents of El Segundo and those in neighboring communities can immediately begin receiving pertinent information via text message, email, and web via Nixle.  Nixle is a community information service provider built exclusively to provide secure and reliable communications. It enables emergency response personnel to provide members of the community with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons, evacuation of buildings or neighborhoods, a chemical spill or sewer mishap.
